Review: Behind Closed Doors

Being in a romantic relationship is something you should value and cherish. We all want to love and be loved. But sometimes the person that we’re with may not give us the same love, or love at all. In the novel Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris, tells the story of Grace who is a single woman in her early thirties. While she’s had a few boyfriends here and there none of them have lasted long. Grace believes that it’s because she’s her sister Millie’s sole care giver. Millie has Down Syndrome and their parents really want no part in caring for Millie.  Grace believes that no man would want someone in her situation, especially since Millie will live with Grace when she turns 18 when she leaves her school.   

One day at the park Millie and Grace meet the charming and handsome Jack Angel. Jack seems to be the perfect man. He’s single, he’s a high-powered attorney who defends battered woman, and he’s taken special interest in Millie. After six short months Jack proposes to Grace and soon begins Grace’s nightmare. While it’s a little predictable, I found myself saying ‘what’ to myself as the true Jack emerged. I kept wondering how someone could be so cruel and sadistic to another human being.  

Grace is very devoted to her sister, and she’d do anything for her. Even if that means going to extreme measures to protect her sister. I sympathized with Grace in this story, she thought that she was marry the perfect man and instantly his attitude changed. Which is one of my greatest fears if I ever fall in love.  This isn’t a genre that I normally read. But I enjoyed every twist and turn the story took. I don’t want to give too much of the story away, because I encourage you to read the story. Nothing is always as it seems and even though things seem perfect on the outside that may not always be the case.

Review: American Horror Story: Cult

I wasn't too sure what to think about this season of American Horror Story. With the way things are using the 2016 Presidential campaign, could ruffle some people feathers the wrong way. But it’s what we have to deal with like it or not. Since a young child I’ve loved horror. I can’t say that I’ve watched every season of American Horror Story from beginning to end but I have watched them here and there.  Season seven of American Horror Story: Cult opened with the 2016 Presidential campaign.  It also takes place in my home state of Michigan. Which was honestly a very horrifying experience, the election not my home state.

Three of the characters this season are Ally Mayfair-Richards played by Sarah Paulson, her wife Ivy Mayfair-Richards played by Alison Pill, and their 10-year-old son Oz Mayfair-Richards played by Cooper Dodson. While Oz watches that his parents and their friends are upset over the results, they assure him that nothing will happen to them.  On top of the election and the elections aftermath Ryan Murphy decided to throw in Ally's anxiety and phobias (her fears of clowns and holes) to give it the scary element. I'm not afraid of clowns, but to be honesty if I saw anything like Twisty in real life; I'd would be scared. I'd be very scared indeed. 

We also meet Winter and Kai Anderson. I believe their twins or they just might be brother and sister. But either way they have a strange relationship between the two of them. Winter ends up babysitting for Oz and while the moms are out they witness a murder form Ivy and Ally’s friends (The Chang’s) next door. Winter later lies to Ally and Ivy saying he only came outside when he saw the police. 

A gang of clowns come and torture and kill Mr. and Mrs. Chang in their home. Re-watching the episode I believe that Kai had something to do with it. At a city hall meeting Kai made protest, regarding extra deputies standing guard at the local Jewish Community Center. After his speech Mr. Chang, pretty much tears him down. Especially after he goes on a long rant. As he walking away he says that “there is nothing more dangerous than a humiliated man.” Which makes me think he was behind the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Chang. I could be wrong, it’s just my theory.

I’m excited to see where Murphy takes this season of AHS. It looks very promising.
