It’s graduation season and kids and adults from kindergarten
all the way up to college are walking across the stage and entering their next
phase in life. A while back I wrote an article called Bachelor’s Degree? What else do you have?. I talked about how a bachelor degree is just
as good as a high school diploma these days. I graduated in 2012 with hopes
that I would find a job in media. While, I kind of work in media, it’s not in
the area I
I always dreamed of working in television growing up and I
would even pretend that I had my own talk show like Rikki Lake. But when I was
in college I don’t believe that I took the proper steps to achieve my dreams.
My school had a TV and Radio station that I didn’t utilize. While I can’t be
100% sure that working for my school’s TV station would have helped I can’t say
that it wouldn’t have either.
After applying to over 300 jobs (yes that is an accurate
number) in the last three years I haven’t had much luck in finding the job of
my dreams. Or even one that allows me to pay my bills and not live pay check to
pay check. To help boost my resume I went back to school for a certificate in
social media. Five months after completing that, I’m sadly still in the same
position. But, luck enough I am using my certificate by volunteering for my
local chapter of the American Cancer Society helping them with their social
media posts for a local relay event. I also can’t forget The Odyssey Online and
being able to be creative in my writing. As well as dabbling in YouTube every
now and then.
Will those help me get my foot in the door somewhere? I
don’t know. But if I don’t try then I’ll never know if it would have worked or
not. While I’m still searching I’m also thinking was communications the right
field for me? Should I have pursed psychology or education? This is actually
something that I’m considering since I feel like the media world has no place
for me.
I’m going to be 30 in a few months and I feel thought my
best years are gone. I try not to compare myself to my peers but I feel as
though I don’t measure up to others my age. While all that sounds depressing,
I’m writing this to say that. While things may not work out for you in the
beginning there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Don’t get discourage if the first or second internship or
job doesn’t hire you. Someone out there will see your potential and want you on
their team. As for me, I’ll keep thinking of articles to submit to The Odyssey Online,
volunteering and making videos. As well as praying and hoping that someone see’s
my potential, ambition and takes the chance to hire me.
